n64gm174 - Developed by Kodiak Interactive Software Studios, Inc. and Published by Electronic Arts, Inc. "WCW Backstage Assault," was released for the Nintendo 64 (N64) entertainment System on November 8, 2000. This is a 3rd-Person Perspective backstage wrestling game that was the final licsensing of the World Championship Wrestling (WCW), because the company's assets were purchased by the the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) three months after this was released. This game doesn't feature in-ring wrestling, but as its name illustrates, it features WCW Backstage Assault. I'd say this is not so much a typical wrestling game as it is more of a no-holds-barred brawling or fighting game. What sets this game apart from others is its one-on-one battles that go on in bathrooms, locker rooms, a semi-trailer lot, outdoor arenas and other peculiar places. Each of the wrestlers in Backstage Assault has their usual set of characteristic moves, but also have the ability to use their area and any various surrounding items, such as chairs and tables, urinals on the wall in bathroom or pay phones in the locker room. You win your match by either pinfall or submission. It also features a very comprehensive roster of popular wrestlers, over 50 W.C.W. wrestlers from Jeff Jarrett to Booker T., and you can earn extra bonus points and unlock hidden wrestlers by performing certain tasks in each arena. Not only create your own wrestler (even lets you specify holes in a wrestler's pants), but you can modify an existing wrestler, or choose from a large collection of WCW talent. And a new option now allows you to choose women characters and play the cat fights yourself. The control and gameplay of WCW Backstage Assault is pretty simple and easy to pick up. The graphics I would say are standard for the time and system, featuring more than 800 motion-captured animations. The soundtrack and commentary are good, especially the commentary. The team of Tony Schivonne and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan do very well together, and usually are right on top of the action. WCW Backstage Assault for the Nintendo 64 is a novel game, with over 14 backstage areas, over 65 wrestlers, and lots of weapons in each room. Enjoy!
