River City Ransom

$42.99

#gm0040 - Released in january of 1990 by Technos Japan Corp, River City Ransom is a rare martial arts game where you play as either Ryan or Alex. It started as a popular Japanese game called "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari" and quickly became a classic here in this country. The scenario is that a thug named Slick and his powerful gang takes over a high school and uses it as headquarters for his gang to terrorize the city streets. He has kidnapped your (Ryan's) girlfriend and it's up to you to fight your way through the River City gangs before you can do battle with Slick and save your girl. To the novice or newbe this may seem like any other martial arts butt-kicking game, but once you start to play you quickly realize that this game is innovative and unique. It has a nice symmetry and flow to it and incorporates roll playing. On top of that the gameplay is "excellent" as well as fun. So much so that you can even grab your partner and hit the street punks with him! Moreover, as you fight these punks, you also can pick up money they drop when you defeat them. You can use this, because unlike other games of this sort, the shops and restaurants are not all just window dressing. You can actually stop in many places on the street and buy valuable items or food. This will nourish you and make you stronger and more powerful. Don't underestimate this game, it is set apart from your normal butt-kicker game because it's actually interesting. It takes skill and strategy to build yourself up to be able to defeat slick in the final battle. The game uses a password system, but be forewarned, the passwords are long, upper case and lower case, so make sure that you have pen and paper and double check what you've written. In Europe the game is simply called "Street Gangs," but whatever it's title, it rightly takes it's place on the Diamond Life list of top 20 NES games of all Time.
